Learn more about JGBF’s areas of impact and priorities below. The priorities described are set within the Foundation’s 2021-2023 Strategic Plan, which was approved by the JGBF Board of Trustees. The Strategic Plan guides JGBF staff in evaluating funding concepts.
In evaluating grant opportunities, the Foundation gives priority to organizations with a strong track record for success and to projects that will result in significant impact and enduring outcomes. With occasional exceptions, the Foundation does not generally make grants under $250,000. Funding concepts presented to JGBF must be endorsed by the organization’s Chief Executive Officer and should be among the organization’s top priorities. In most cases, the foundation prioritizes requests that not only demonstrate community need, but also have a broad base of financial support. JGBF rarely funds projects where it is the sole funder or is expected to provide a significant percentage, more than 30%, of the project budget. Other considerations we give weight to include:
JGBF prioritizes equity-driven outcomes that directly impact disinvested and disenfranchised populations.
JGBF believes in building on the inherent strengths and potential present in communities and organizations.
JGBF strives to treat grantees as partners and seeks to accomplish more through the multiplying power of collaboration.
JGBF seeks to support organizations that develop innovative approaches to solving critical community issues.
Strong program evaluation is important to assess successes and elucidate lessons learned that can inform future work.
JGBF wants the world to see Louisville and Kentucky as place where people want to live, work and play.
JGBF believes that a strong nonprofit sector makes a more vibrant community.
As with our strategic priorities, we want to build on the strengths that make our communities thrive. Cultural assets, networks and the generosity of our city and state are some of the positive attributes that we believe improve the quality of life of our citizens.
A Letter of Interest (LOI) is the first step to submitting an idea and to receiving an invitation to submit a full application.
LOIs were formerly referred to as concept submissions. Going forward LOIs will continue to be accepted on a rolling basis and will be reviewed monthly.
If you already have a concept submission in progress, it has been converted to an LOI and you may complete it at any time.
Please note that the Foundation already has an unusual number of requests in 2024 so funding will be limited.
Updated Quality of Life evaluation criteria have been posted here.
For the 2024 Quality of Life application cycle, all LOIs received by April 15 will be considered.
LOIs will either be held in our pipeline for future consideration, advanced to a full proposal, or declined.
All organizations for the Quality of Life grant cycle will receive an update on their LOI submission by May 1, 2024.
If invited, full grant applications will be due by midnight on June 3, 2024.
Final funding decisions on submitted applications will be made by the Foundation in August 2024.
