2007 Year In Review

The Foundation awarded 31 grants in the calendar year 2007 totaling $20,482,428. Approximately 58% were awarded to non-profit organizations in Jefferson County, Kentucky. Thirty-four percent of all grants awarded were for construction or renovation projects, 21% were awarded for land acquisition and approximately 11% for program support. Percentage breakout by program area was Civic Affairs - 21%, Health - 25%, Education - 35%, and Human Services - 19%. Reflected in the amount paid for 2007 was the last of three $5 million grants installments payable to the University of Louisville's James Graham Brown Cancer Center which was approved in 2004.

In recognition of the Foundation's long-time President who passed away at the end of 2006, the trustees approved a one million dollar endowed scholarship fund at Centre College to be known as the Joe McDowell Rodes Scholarship. The funds are to be used for students with financial need, with preference given to Kentucky residents. The Foundation awarded a second grant to Centre toward a major expansion and renovation of Centre's science facilities.

The Foundation reallocated a 2004 grant awarded to The David School. The grant amount was awarded as a challenge grant to Georgetown College toward construction of an academic building to house archives and records of Bishop College, Diversity Program and faculty and administrative offices. The Foundation supported a community-wide initiative to improve reading levels in Jefferson County through a grant to JCPS Foundation toward the Every 1 Reads community development project. The Foundation also approved two grants toward the acquisition of property to support the development of the Louisville Medical Center's Research and Business Park.
